He specialises in capturing careful arrangements of dozens, hundreds, or, as in this case, thousands, of naked people against industrial or urban backdrops. The mass nude photographic session on the Yarra River's Princes Bridge and adjoining Alexandra Gardens, was Mr Tunick's contribution to Melbourne's 2001 Fringe Festival. Mr Tunick sang the praises of Melbourne for supporting his latest "temporary installation" and being open-minded enough to give him free rein to commandeer a key city street for his art. "The government and city of Melbourne have been very friendly - they just said 'pick your site,"' Mr Tunick said. Melbourne's support enabled him to better his previous record for mass nude modelling, which was 2500 in Montreal in May. Mr Tunick commended the tenacity of those who arrived at dawn to strip in cold and drizzly conditions at the location which had been a carefully guarded secret. "I was amazed and surprised that so many showed up - the weather was horrible," he said. The volunteers displayed all variety of bodies - old and young, fat and thin, exhibitionists and the more modest. "That's how I get the masses, by inviting everyone, all nationalities, religions, colour and size. Anyone can pose," Mr Tunick said.
