Student Finds Substitute Teachers Having Sex
WETHERSFIELD -- A high school student stumbled on two substitute teachers having sex last week in the back of a locked classroom, according to school documents released Wednesday.
One of the substitutes has since resigned. Information on the other substitute could not be obtained Wednesday. In a memo to Assistant Superintendent Robert Buganski dated Nov. 6, high school Principal Thomas Moore wrote that the student had intended to visit another teacher in the classroom on Nov. 5 when she discovered 22-year-old Martha Czernicki and the other substitute , whose name was not disclosed.
"When [the student] went to open the door it was locked," Moore wrote. "In an unusual circumstance there was some yellow paper covering the window of the classroom ...the paper did not cover the entire window and when [the student] peeked through the window to see if [the teacher] was available, [the student] observed the two substitute teachers, in the back of the room having sexual relations."
The student typically visited the unidentified teacher, with whom she had a close relationship, during a study hall between 8:42 a.m. to 9:37 a.m. The teacher and the student have the same free period and the classroom is unoccupied at that time, the memo says. After witnessing the incident, the student telephoned the teacher, who then telephoned Moore.
On Wednesday, Superintendent Lynne Pierson would not confirm the name of the other person involved. The Courant has prepared a letter seeking that information under freedom of information laws.
Czernicki, a noncertified teacher who held a day-to-day substitute position with the school district, would not comment about the incident when she was contacted by a reporter last week. She could not be reached Wednesday.
Documents show Czernicki submitted a letter of resignation two days after the incident to Buganski, citing "financial reasons." On Nov. 13, Buganski responded, acknowledging receipt of Czernicki's letter. However, he wrote that the reason for resignation outlined in Czernicki's letter was incomplete.
"As we discussed in our meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, we determined that you engaged in misconduct on Nov. 5," Buganski wrote in the letter. "You were advised during our meeting that you would no longer be utilized as a substitute teacher in the Wethersfield Public Schools and that you would receive no letter of reference now or in the future."
Police Chief John Karangekis said last week he received a call from Pierson, who described an event that took place on school grounds. Pierson wanted to know whether the incident could be a criminal violation, Karangekis said. He said he called the state's attorney's office in New Britain and "it was determined" there was no criminal violation.
"They had some expectation of privacy," Karangekis said of the two substitutes. "The door was locked and the windows covered. Obviously they did something they did not expect to be discovered."
