Porn Seen On Public Access Channel
Viewers who tuned in to Naperville's community television station early Sunday were startled to see X-rated programming, police say.
Between 1 and 2:45 a.m. Sunday, "hard-core" pornography was broadcast to some televisions through Channel 17, a local cable access station, according to Naperville police Sgt. Steven Schindlbeck.
Residents who know Channel 17 for its wholesome shows such as "Rise 'n' Shine Kids," "Showbuzz" and "Pet-A-Rama," alerted Naperville police to the lewd programming.
Schindlbeck said police, who did not witness the pornography themselves, notified employees at Naperville Community Television Channel 17, including executive director, Mary Lou Wehrli.
Wehrli immediately turned on her own TV when she got the call from police just before 2 a.m., she said.
She didn't see pornography; instead, she saw programs about the Millennium Carillon and Harold Moser.
She drove to the TV station, at 800 Fifth Ave., to investigate, and discovered that the problem wasn't with NCTV Channel 17, it was with one of the franchises that air the local access channel.
Channel 17 is broadcast by two cable franchises in Naperville; AT&T Broadband and Wide Open West, based in Colorado, which just finished buying what used to be Americast Cable in Naperville at the end of November, Wehrli said.
When she got to the station, she watched two screens - one showing the usual programming on the AT&T Broadband network and the hardcore pornography, showing only on the Wide Open West Network.
"It's a terrible introduction to the city from that company," Wehrli said.
She called Wide Open West's local offices in Naperville, and did not reach anyone in the building.
She tried to contact several other people at Wide Open West by phone, but didn't have any luck. She did finally reach a customer service representative in Colorado, Wehrli said, who was aware of the situation, but said a supervisor wasn't there, so instructed Wehrli to leave a message.
As of Sunday evening, Wehrli still didn't have a response to the message she left, but was actively trying to discover why this had happened, and what to do to pull the plug if anything like this should ever happen again.
"The situation has come and gone, and we have an interest in making it right," Wehrli said. "That's a necessity. The city can't allow any franchise to maintain a system that's compromisible. No one should have been subject to viewing that garbage. We air quality programming that supports the community in every way."
Richard Furstenau, a Naperville council member who sits on the executive board of Naperville Community Television, had not heard of the complaints early Sunday evening.
"We will get to the bottom of this and find out exactly what happened," Furstenau said.
Naperville Community Television is led by an 11-member board of directors, which includes two city council members, and it receives some money from the city.
Wide Open West could not be reached for comment Sunday.
