Female Hair Fetishist Arrested
LONG BEACH - The suspected "haircut bandit" has long had a fascination with hair and paid hundreds of dollars to shear locks from women's heads, a former girlfriend said Wednesday.
Vicki Parker said Michael Lynn Howard of Norwalk kept large amounts of hair around his home, especially in the bedroom, and that he once gave her $200 so he could shave her head. She said Howard paid other women for their hair because it aroused him to play with it.
"It's a sex kind of thing," she said. "He had to have hair."
Parker said she was with Howard, 47, on Tuesday when police took him into custody at an apartment she's staying at near the corner of 10th Street and Pine Avenue. He is suspected of forcibly cutting the hair of at least one girl and four women, ages 12 to 45, in Long Beach and Los Angeles between Dec. 18 and Monday.
Alma Verenice Espinoza, 26, of Long Beach sa id she identified Howard as her attacker in a photo lineup Wednesday morning.
Espinoza said she was attacked at 8:15 p.m. Dec. 18 while sitting at a bus stop near the corner of Seventh Street and Redondo Avenue. She noticed a man in his car about 4 feet away, looking at her for several minutes.
She said the man suddenly opened the car door with an angry look on his face, took a few steps toward her, grabbed her hair from behind, then pushed her to the ground and cut her locks with what felt like a knife.
"He never said anything," said Espinoza, who had hair to her waistline. "He left me with almost no hair."
She said she screamed, and the attacker fled. When the bus arrived moments later, Espinoza immediately jumped on but couldn't speak or cry.
"I was shaking on the bus until I got home," Espinoza said. "I still feel very nervous."
Parker described Howard as a good, caring friend who would never intentionally harm anyone.
"He's not a 'wiggo ,' " Parker said.
She said Howard is a partner in a 10-year-old Huntington Beach custom bicycle business and enjoys sky-diving.
One of the suspect's neighbors, in the 14700 block of Helwig Avenue in Norwalk, said Howard didn't socialize much but that he was a nice person who was always glad to lend his tools.
"He never caused any problems," said the next-door neighbor, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "If I could pick anyone in the world to do what he (allegedly) did, he would've been the last one I picked."
Parker said that when Howard arrived at the apartment around noon Tuesday, he had a wound on the side of his head, his pants were stained and he wanted to talk about his problems with business, health and finances.
She said he was upset about an incident the previous day, in which a deputy saw a man cutting a woman's hair with a knife in East Los Angeles. When the deputy tried to stop the man, he ran, then got into a parked car.
Authorities said the man tried to run over the deputy, who fired several rounds into the vehicle. The man eluded deputies.
On Tuesday, Howard had just finished taking a shower and was about to call his brother, an Orange County probation officer, when Long Beach police arrived to arrest him. They were acting on an anonymous tip.
"He was devastated," Parker recalled.
Howard is expected to be arraigned today in Long Beach Superior Court. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and armed robbery and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
