Pilot Survives Two Crashes In One Day
A pilot has escaped from two air crashes in one day with just a few scratches and bruises.Justin Kirkbride of Farmington, New Mexico, survived a plane crash in the south-west Colorado mountains.An air force helicopter picked him up but then crashed near his single-engine plane.Mr Kirkbride, 31, spent six hours walking in knee-deep snow and heavy woods before being found by the search and rescue team.After picking him up, the helicopter plunged 70 feet to the ground after its rotor struck a tree. Its tail and rotors were damaged but no-one was injured.The helicopter crashed just under a mile from the Cessna plane, which Mr Kirkbride brought down in a patch of trees after struggling to control it.His two passengers, his friends, Larry Diamond and Tom Robbins escaped serious injury. Mr Diamond broke a leg and a foot and suffered a neck injury, while Mr Robbins sustained two cracked ribs and cuts and bruises.Mr Kirkbride played down the crashes, saying: "I like to think of them as landings because I walked away."He also says he wasn't scared: "I don't think scared's the right word. There was definite concern. I was concerned for my passengers. As a pilot, that's your number one concern."
