WORLD NEWS: Drinkers oppose plans to turn pub into church Drinkers on a Sheffield estate are opposing plans to turn a local pub into a church. The city's diocese has brought the Fellbrigg public house on the Norfolk Park estate and plans to turn it into the new parish church. But more than 300 people have signed a petition to save the pub and posters have been put up reading, "Keep Our Pub Open" and "Save The Fellbrigg". Some locals have even threatened to chain themselves to the building, The Sunday Telegraph reports. Martin Sheppard, a spokesman for the diocese, said: "The estate is being extensively redeveloped and we need a parish church which is more central. Both the nearby churches are in outdated buildings - one is in a prefabricated hut - and we feel that the time is right to create a merged parish." Although the diocese says it may change its plans if the pub regulars can find an alternative site for a new church and another owner for the Fellbrigg. One protester Elaine Bainbridge said: "There are plenty of places around here for the Holy Spirit. We just want somewhere we can carry on enjoying spirits. This is a community pub, and losing it will rip the heart out of the community. If we have to chain ourselves to the railings, we will." A spokesman for Avebury Taverns, which owns the pub, said: "The sale is not subject to any conditions and what the Church chooses to do with the building is ultimately a decision for them." TODAY'S LAME JOKE: At The Restaurant A man enters his favorite ritzy restaurant and while sitting at his regular table, he noticed a gorgeous woman sitting at a table nearby....all alone.
