It means people too timid to refuse when asked for their phone number can be saved the embarrassment. They can simply give a special number which, when dialled, gives out the message: "Unfortunately, the person who gave you this number does not want to talk to you or speak to you again. We'd like to take this opportunity to officially reject you." Then, by means of a touch-tone system, it allows users to speak with a "comfort specialist", hear a "sad poem", or "cling to the unrealistic hope that a relationship is still possible". Jonah Peretti, 28, who co-founded the Rejection Line with his sister Chelsea, 24, said: "We started it as a sort of an experiment in viral media, to try to create something and see how it spreads. But it's also a parody of the dating scene." Mr Peretti told the Guardian: "It's the idea that it's needed is funny - that dating has become so dehumanised that people need an automated system to help them reject people." Between 500,000 and 1 million people have called so far, he estimates - including some women. "We don't necessarily agree with the way somebody uses the line," Mr Peretti said. "We heard a story of someone using it to break up with his girlfriend who he'd been seeing for six months." TODAY'S LAME JOKE: Chemistry Teacher A chemistry teacher wanted to teach his class a lesson about the dangers of drink, so he produced an experiment that involved a glass of water, a glass of whiskey, and two worms. "Now, class, closely observe the worms," said the teacher while putting a worm into the water. The worm in the water writhed about, happy as a worm in water could be. He then put the second worm into the whiskey. It curled up and writhed about painfully, then quickly sank to the bottom, dead as a doornail.
