WORLD NEWS: Soldiers to strip women wearing trousers in Swaziland A senior royal official in Swaziland is warning women who wear trousers in public that soldiers will rip them off. Jim Gama told a meeting that trousers were disrespectful to the country's traditions. A resident quoted him as saying soldiers will strip offenders and rip their trousers to shreds.Mary Dlaminini, 22, said trouser-wearing women face being stripped naked if they're caught. Human rights activists say Swazi authorities are oppressing women. Doo Apane, a lawyer with Women in Law in Southern Africa said: "The dictates about what women can and can't wear is medieval but unfortunately reflects the fact that women are legal minors in Swaziland." The BBC says many young women now wear trousers and the move is likely to meet resistance. Women are already banned from wearing trousers in government offices and in the palace.
