Ralph Whittington, from Clinton, Maryland sold it because his house was packed to the rafters with porn. The museum is a serious establishment with an academic purpose which bought the collection for an undisclosed amount. Whittington has collected most types of legal pornography, he said: "The important thing is the diversity. That's where my collection stands out. This should give me a little credibility." Whittington learned his archiving skills while working at the US Library of Congress. He told the Washington Post: "I hope you'll convey to your readers that I'm serious about this.
