WORLD NEWS: Gene leads to big butts A single gene could explain why some people have larger bums than others. Experts in the US have discovered a mutated gene which leads to some animals boasting "unusually big and muscular bottoms". Researchers from the Duke University Medical Centre, in North Carolina, hope the genetic mutation will explain how muscle and fat is deposited in humans. They described the discovery in sheep as "especially exciting", saying the unusual gene has evaded all traditional means of detection for nearly a decade. The gene has been named "callipyge" - which translates as "beautiful buttocks" in Greek - because the sheep have such large, muscular bottoms with very little fat. Scientists say such an attribute could prove beneficial in breeding because it enables the animals to convert food into muscle 30% more efficiently than the average sheep. According to Randy Jirtle, professor of radiation oncology at Duke University and co-author of the study, the gene could explain specific processes that give rise to obesity and fat metabolism. "These sheep are, in effect, pumping iron without lifting weights, said Professor Jirtle. "They are converting food into muscle in their hind regions, instead of converting food into fat. Results of the study, funded by the US Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health, were published in the October 2002 issue of US science journal Genome Research. LAME JOKE FOR TODAY: Teachers vs the Maintenance Man According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would make up their faces in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips against the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night, the maintenance man would remove them and the next day, the girls would do it again. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls into the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night. To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet bowel, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.
