Unlike the male impotency pill Viagra, which acts on the sexual organs, the drug in the most recent study stimulates the brain. Ian Russell, a specialist nurse at Dumfries and Galloway NHS Trust, is encouraged by the results of tests carried out on 10 women during an 18-week study. The women, who suffer from lack of sexual desire, were treated with a drug called apomorphine. Eight of the 10 women reported a heightened sexual desire at the end of 18 weeks using the drug, which mimics the effect of one of the brain's main chemical messengers, dopamine. Since its launch in 1998, scientists have been investigating whether Viagra, which has been used by more than 20 million men worldwide, could work for women too. Ian Russell's apomorphine trials could offer hope to women everywhere who suffer from reduced sexual desire. But despite the encouraging initial results from Scotland, scientists remain cautious about Mr Russell's findings. And the specialist nurse agrees more research is needed and has begun a much larger clinical trial, which should be completed next year. Dumb Joke of the day: Brain Transplant In the hospital the relatives gathered in the waiting room where their family member lay gravely ill. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and somber. "I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news," he said as he surveyed the worried faces. "The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, semi-risky and you will have to pay for the brain yourselves." The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a great length of time, someone sked,"Well, how much does a brain cost?" The doctor quickly responded, "$5,000 for a male brain, and $200 for a female brain." The moment turned awkward. Men in the room tried not to smile, avoiding eye contact with the women, but some actually smirked. A man, unable to control his curiosity, blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask. "Why is the male brain so much more?" The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and so to the entire group said,"It's just standard pricing procedure.
